Traditional one-on-one counselling is the safest modality of counselling. It provides a space for a client to be open and vulnerable, as well as fully seen and heard. In my experience, when people are given a private therapeutic space, they discover unknown information about themselves. Parts of the self that have remained hidden, feel safe enough to venture forward and speak. This is important to the healing process, as trauma splits the self, and healing integrates the separated parts of self.
Research has found that different models of therapy are equally effective. No one model stands out as more effective than another. The level of effectiveness of therapy is much more dependant on the quality of relationship between therapist and client. The therapist’s level of empathy, warmth, and hopefulness was a significant factor.
It has since become clear that the biggest factor that predicts a positive therapeutic outcome, is attachment. For clients who have experienced difficult relationships of any kind, a therapist can become a source of healthy secure attachment. The structure of the relationship allows the client to feel deeply safe, to fully emerge in this safety, and therefore deeply reflect on their own life experiences.
As a therapist, I aim to provide you a sense of safety and containment, so that you can emerge as you are. I allow the connection between us to strengthen, and use this as a foundation upon which we can embark on our therapeutic journey. I believe this space will allow you to feel seen and heard, and allow you to freely explore hidden parts of yourself.
